NSPC Director, Phil Potter, and Former NSPC Fellow, Chen Wang, Publish a New Article: Governmental Responses to Terrorism in Autocracies: Evidence from China

NSPC Founding Director, Phil Potter, and Former NSPC Fellow, Chen Wang, recently published an article, “Governmental Responses to Terrorism in Autocracies: Evidence from China” in the British Journal of Political Science.

In the article, the authors explore the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) treatment of domestic terrorist incidents in the official party mouthpiece – the People’s Daily. They argue that “the CCP promptly acknowledges terrorist violence only when both domestic and international conditions are favorable.” The article also shed light on the ongoing crisis in Xinjiang, stressing that the crackdown by Chinese authorities against the Uyghur “contributes to grievances and pushes militants into weakly governed border states where they can congregate, train and plan attacks.”
